UnoCSS vs Tailwind — When to Pick Which
Both are atomic-CSS engines. The differences are real but smaller than the internet suggests.
Tailwind
- Massive ecosystem — components, plugins, docs, tutorials
- Large community means StackOverflow answers exist
- Build step via PostCSS; watch mode is fast enough
UnoCSS
- On-demand engine: only the classes you use get generated
- Presets for Tailwind, Wind, Mini, icon packs, typography
- Tight Vite integration — HMR feels instant
- Rules are just JavaScript; you can write your own in 3 lines
Decision Matrix
| Team | Pick |
|---|---|
| Onboarding junior devs, Next.js app | Tailwind |
| Vite + Svelte/Vue, small bundle goals | UnoCSS |
| Need design-system customization | Either — both support theming |
| Need icons inline as classes | UnoCSS (preset-icons) |
Both are good. The "wrong" choice is still better than hand-writing utility classes.
